What Is Family Sponsorship?
Family sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents to bring eligible family members to live with them in Canada. Two of the most common types of sponsorship we assist with at MJ Law are:
- Spousal or common-law partner sponsorship
- Parent or grandparent sponsorship
Each stream has specific eligibility requirements, documentation standards, and timelines, and even one mistake can delay your application.

Who Can Sponsor?
To sponsor a spouse or parent, you must:
✅ Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
✅ Be at least 18 years old
✅ Live in Canada (or plan to return once your sponsored relative arrives)
✅ Be financially capable of supporting your sponsored family member
✅ Not be in default of any previous sponsorship undertakings, immigration loans, or court-ordered support payments
In the case of parent sponsorship, you’ll also need to meet a minimum income threshold and submit an interest to sponsor during IRCC’s intake period.

Sponsoring a Spouse or Partner: What You Need to Know
You can sponsor your:
- Legally married spouse
- Common-law partner (must have lived together for at least 12 consecutive months)
- Conjugal partner (if living together isn’t possible due to legal or cultural barriers)
There are two main processing streams:
- Inland Sponsorship (your partner is already living in Canada)
- Outland Sponsorship (your partner lives outside Canada)
Both require extensive documentation including:
- Proof of relationship (photos, messages, financial ties, shared responsibilities)
- Completed immigration forms
- Police clearances
- Medical exams
- Biometrics
We help you compile a strong application package that meets IRCC requirements, and avoids red flags that can lead to delays or denials.

Sponsoring a Parent or Grandparent
Unlike spousal sponsorship, the process to sponsor a parent is more complex and includes:
- A “lottery” intake system where you submit an interest to sponsor
- Meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the last 3 tax years
- Signing a sponsorship agreement for 20 years (or 10 years for residents of Quebec)
Many people also choose to bring their parents to Canada temporarily through a Super Visa while waiting for the sponsorship program to open.
Whether you’re sponsoring from India, the Philippines, Pakistan, or elsewhere, MJ Law will help ensure your application is complete, compliant, and on time.

Common Mistakes That Delay Sponsorship Applications
🛑 Incomplete forms or missing documents
🛑 Not disclosing previous marriages or dependents
🛑 Insufficient proof of genuine relationship
🛑 Missing financial documents for parent sponsorship
🛑 Not understanding which stream to apply under (inland vs. outland)
We’ve helped countless families across Brampton and Toronto avoid these mistakes, and successfully reunite with their loved ones.
