When Should You Start the Renewal Process?
You should apply to renew your study permit at least 30 days before it expires.
However, we recommend starting 60 to 90 days in advance. This gives you time to gather the right documents, receive updated school letters, and resolve any delays.
✅ Important: Your study permit must be valid on the day you submit your renewal application. If it expires before you apply, you risk losing your student status.

Can You Stay in Canada While Waiting for a Decision?
Yes. If you apply before your permit expires, you will have what’s called “maintained status” (formerly implied status). This means you can stay in Canada and continue studying under the same conditions while your application is being processed.
However, you cannot leave and re-enter Canada during this time without risking your status.

🛑 Insufficient proof of funds

What If Your Permit Already Expired?
If your study permit has already expired, you have 90 days to apply for restoration of status — but you cannot study during this period.
The restoration process includes:
- Paying a restoration fee ($200 CAD) on top of the regular renewal fee
- Writing a detailed explanation of why you missed the deadline
- Submitting updated school and financial documents
This is a more complex process, and it’s best to get legal help right away.
